Friends of the Farmer HOOTENANNY! 2011 - RECAP
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED MAKE
The Fundraiser was held: June 23, 2011
Friends of the Farmer kicked off the inaugural Friends of the Farmer Festival with a Hootenanny! Farm Fresh Fundraising dinner on June 23 at the Copake Country Club and everybody had a blast supporting this great cause and raising funds to launch the FarmOn! Foundation with Cornell Cooperative Extension for Hudson Valley Students to continue studies in agricultural sciences!
Andy Turner, Executive Director from Cornell Cooperative Extension announced the FarmOn! Foundation at the event and CCE partnership with Friends of the Farmer, and after wrote, "It was a truly amazing evening and my head is swimming today as I recall so many interesting conversations with so many awesome people."
Locals, New Yorkers, Farmers, Agricultural students, press, sponsors, supporters all 110 attendees poured into the Greens Restaurant for libations and vittles donated by local farms and prepared by farm to table Chef Glenn Strickling. Talk about local - the entire meal was sourced within 25 miles of the dinner from Sol Flower Farm, Herondale Farm, Ronnybrook Farm, Coach Farm, Hudson Valley Fresh farmers, Pigasso Farm's Rob Kitchen even roasted a whole pig! Local libations were donated from Harvest Spirits Core Vodka, Tuthilltown Spirits Harvest Baby Bourbon, Chatham Brewers and Millbrook Winery. Even the fresh organic herbs were grown down the road by Peggy's Produce for the cocktail.
Farmer Dr. Brent Ridge of 1802 Beekman and Planet Green's hit, The Fabulous Beekman Boys was at the event to share their Harvest Festival success with the crowd and launch the Friends of the Farmer Celebrity Picnic Table Auction - their table was on hand that he and Josh designed and will be featured in Food & Wine Magazine's August issue. The celebrity painted picnic tables will be on display at the July 30th festival for intial bidding and go into the hudson valley community for bidding with an online auction to raise funds and awareness for the FarmOn! Foundation through the summer. Ridge wrote "Pat yourself on the back. It was a great event with a great cause"
Local support from Todd Erling spoke about the importance of sustainability and buying into your local CSA from Hudson Valley AgriBusiness. Nancy Ginsberg wore her message on a savvy T-shirt that read GRASS FED. Sandra Gardner & Cybil Howard from Taconic Hills High School own Harvest Club (that feeds students the lunch they grow) had 11 students represented at the event, their dinners sponsored by friends of the farmer supporters and donors. Mayor Ed Blundell of Red Hook attended as did Tom Crowell of CLC, Julie Cerny of the Sylvia Center/Katchkie Farm, Nicci Cajan of the Chef's Consortium as Noah Sheetz guest as well as Copake Country Club owners Jon & Kim Urban.
Also in attendance were Joyce Varvatos, who's husband John Varvatos is among the celebrities painting the picnic tables to be auctioned at the festival and Greg Calejo, who's partner Thom Filicia is another celebrity picnic table painter. Bob Sacks attended the Hootenanny! and wrote, "What a great evening. A real start to something special for farmers and consumers alike."
